1167. RACK SERIES 17- Parting Tool, Fabric Sandpaper & Dust Collection
» SUBSCRIBE CLICK HERE! ruclips.net/user/askwoodman
VIDEO 17: I shape the flare at the top of the base using a parting tool. Then after masking, I hand sand the flare. Then I sand the entire conic section using my leather-backed wood block and higher-grit fabric-backed sandpaper. My shop-made articulating dust collection system is working great. Finally, I begin the process of parting the top of the conic section getting closer to removing it from the lathe.

      @@AskWoodMan I've always thought your belt drives were so neat. My cousin restores old hit n miss engines. That era is so fascinating. Recently in a car plant I pointed out a huge belt drive to an engineer. He said it drove a 14,000 pound flywheel!

      They are called step pulleys with an idler running on a continuous speed motor. Mine is a 5 speed. Really old technology. When I first started woodworking in my 20's I worked on a Faye & Scott patternmaker's lathe that had old rotten maple sheaves. So I just copied the setup in Baltic birch and it worked great. I have probably made plywood sheaves for different machines maybe 10 times and they are still working great. I still have the tool steel I cut to make the A-belt profile.

    next time you can try sprinkling little salt on the glue. the salt will stop the pieces from sliding around during this kind of glue up. and the salt will melt away..not too much...few grains does the trick. although i admire your patience and keen eye for not getting frustrated with the sliding around and clamps dropping. I really enjoy learning the logic behind the arrangement of a persons shop/workspace, and the creative solutions to problems. One question: in an older video you mentioned that your table saw hight was 40", but if you had it to do over again, you would go 42", maybe 43"... I'm curious, what's the height in your new shop? Standing a bit over 6'2", I'm in the process of building a riser for my table saw which will be about 42" tall. Seen very few people go 40" or taller... perhaps they're too busy working comfortably-- HA! Enjoyed this series~

    • @AskWoodMan
      @AskWoodMan 2 месяца назад

      The lathe is shop made. The headstock was machined from 4140 1-1/2" 8TPI on pillow block bearings and the tailstock is salvage. I made it 25 years ago. But all the rest is mostly scrap yard steel. I do have plans but they are in an obsolete format I need to figure out how to retrieve. The sheaves are a 5 speed Baltic birch idler pulley setup. There will be more info about the lathe in this series.

    I don't doubt the quality of this piece, but I'm interested in the math behind. Let's assume you have a 2-3 feet (1m) radius protractor so set your fence directly at the saw. How inaccurate would a (ex) 15 segment (12.0) degree be? Assuming as example the short end of the triangle is less that 1mm /1/16" off? Of course the shorter your protractor is, the more error would multiply. Good to see videos from you again.
